5 Hands-On Science Activities for Lower Primary

Children love to learn through play, and research (e.g. Unicef) indicates what educators see all the time in the classroom: play-based activities are an indispensable part of lower primary education, with children more engaged, interested and motivated. Fortunately, science activities gives children so many curriculum-aligned memorable play opportunities to do, test and learn about science.

RIC Publications has been supporting science learning for all ages and stages for over 30 years, and you’ll find hundreds of exciting science resources in our Science category to help learners big and small explore the Earth and stars, chemistry, biology and more. For science classrooms in Lower Primary, learning-at-home families and parents supplementing their children’s science education, one of the most important lessons you can teach your young learners is that science is a rewarding, fun subject. By making science come to life, you can inspire a love of STEM learning that lasts a lifetime.

We’ve compiled some entertaining educational science activities for lower primary children for your students to enjoy, whether in the classroom or at home. They’re great fun for the whole family, and watching children learn about how their reality works is a wonderful experience for adults too – you might find yourself nostalgic for your own science classes!

These ideas are all samples from the Hands-On Science series, and are accompanied by teachers’ page including information to help you guide your young learner and explain the principles a way that motivates the student and helps them to reflect upon what they’ve learned.

If you’ve enjoyed these ideas for fun science activities, you’ll be pleased to learn that they’ve come from the excellent Hands-on science series, which offers three books of 36 science activities each. With books tailored for ages 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12, you’ll be able to make science fun together all the way through the primary school years!

Each book in the Hands-on science series is divided into four sections, drawn from the national science strands:

• Earth and beyond

• Energy and change

• Life and living

• Natural and processed materials

Each section contains nine activities chosen from the most popular topics in the four science strands, and all activities are accompanied by teachers’ pages just like in these samples so that you can ensure the activities are both educational and entertaining as they bring science to life.
