Celebrate Easter

In the northern hemisphere, Easter occurs in spring, a time of new life in the natural world after the hardship of a cold winter. As the soil warms up, plants begin to emerge and leaves bud and blossom on the bare branches of trees. The lambing season is in full swing, meadows are awash with young rabbits while young chicks and ducklings peck their way into the world.

There are many ways to enjoy the Easter message of new life.

  • In autumn, bury flower bulbs in soil and store pots in a dark place. Bring them out in spring and watch and wait for the first signs of life.
  • Illustrate the life cycle of a butterfly or a frog.
  • Bring a plain straw hat to life by decorating it with symbols of spring and new life. Hold an Easter bonnet parade.
  • Weave straw, raffia or art paper baskets to collect eggs in a chocolate Easter egg hunt.
  • Find a simple recipe to make hot cross buns.
  • Use different methods to decorate hard-boiled eggs and use them in an egg and spoon race.
  • Create a game of Bunny! or Bilby! based on the classic Milton Bradley® game, Beetle!

New life can also refer to relationships. Easter is a time to renew old friendships, forget differences and to celebrate the joy our families and friends bring.

  • Plan a family/friends day out with a picnic and fun activities.
  • Design a card and write a message for a special person telling why they are so cherished.
  • Create a simple family tree with photographs and complete the message, 'My family is special to me because ...'

Easter is also a time of change, changing from our old ways to new ways.

  • What can I do to make my life more healthy?easter_egg6_1600x1200
  • What can I do to help my family more?
  • What can I do to make my friends and family happier?
  • What can I do to make positive changes for me?

Easter is the most important event in the Christian calendar, but you do not have to be a Christian to celebrate it!
