Teachers review The Comprehension strategies box in 2022

We’re back with another round of reviews! More teachers have used (and loved) The Comprehension strategies box and wanted to share their thoughts to help other educators.

First, we’ll go through what exactly The Comprehension strategies box is and how to use it—for those of you who are new or anyone who needs a refresher. Once you’re up to speed, check out some Australian teachers’ experiences with this bestselling box!

What is The Comprehension strategies box?

The Comprehension strategies box is a six-box series designed to teach the following nine comprehension strategies to children at all levels of reading ability:

  • Predicting
  • Visualising
  • Making connections
  • Questioning
  • Clarifying
  • Summarising
  • Determining importance
  • Inferring
  • Synthesising

This series has a strong focus on differentiation, with different levels of reading comprehension texts for each strategy. It is graded according to Lexile® levels, so you can perfectly match each student to a text appropriate to their reading level. The text cards are double sided, with two texts for each of the three reading levels—level 1 being the easiest and level 3 the hardest.

What’s in the box?
  • 162 cards: 9 strategies x 3 double-sided text cards x 6 duplicate copies = a total of 54 original texts over 27 cards!
  • Teacher guide
  • Activity book

How do I use it?

‘This is The Comprehension strategies box and it is absolutely amazing! It will help me teach a range of reading comprehension skills such as predicting, visualising, making connections, questioning, clarifying, summarising, determining importance, inferring and synthesising.

For each of the comprehension strategies there are six different texts available—two below level, two at level and two above level, so perfect for differentiation! There are six copies of each text so it is perfect for guided reading groups.

It comes with an activity book and a teacher guide so there are lots of activities that you can photocopy for your students and then there is a whole book of information on how to model and teach the strategies as well. They are all colour coded in different colours for the different comprehension strategies and it is really easy to use.’

'I was lucky enough to be gifted a box last year which I used religiously with my 1s and I didn’t know how I’d plan my reading groups this year without it—so I got another one!
This box is a one-stop shop for your guided reading/comprehension needs ...'
