The Kindness Rocks project

The Kindness Rocks project

The Kindness Rocks project

Have you heard about The Kindness Rocks Project? The idea is simple and is part of a worldwide movement to encourage creativity and kindness towards others.

Simply paint a rock then hide it for others to find. If you find a painted rock, take a photo and post it with the hashtag #KindnessRocksProject. You can then decide if you would like to keep it or re-hide it for someone else to find! Don't make it too difficult to find because the idea is to spread joy and excitement for others.

We think this would be an amazing initiative to have in any classroom. While it fully compliments the Arts and Health curriculum, if you choose to hide the rocks you can also link it to mapping, mathematics and much more!

Get creative and create a kindness rock garden!

  1. Watch this video by Kids Crafts by three sisters.
  2. Source pebbles or rocks in whatever shape you desire. You can have them all the same for consistancy or change them up for a bit of variety.
  3. For a good base, paint with outdoor masonary paint. This step is not always necessary but will give you a solid base coat depending on the rocks used.
  4. Paint the background colour using acrylic paints.
  5. Once the paint is dry, use acrylics or Sharpie pens to get creative and add your own flair. If you use a Sharpie please allow at least 24 hours for it to completely dry.
  6. Seal the stones with a matt or gloss varnish spray or outdoor PVA glue.
  7. Add some of the completed stones to a kindness garden in your school for your students to admire.
  8. The fun part - Hide the rest in various locations around the school for your students to find. You can create a mapping activity based on it or simply leave them for students to find over time.
  9. Encourage your students to create some with their parents as homework. Both the students and parents will benefit!

Give it a go - we would love to see how what your #KindnessRockStars create. And remember, the right word at the right time can change someone's life. The impact of positive words on little ones should never be underestimated.
